Good Food Tips

I saw this article on saving $$ on groceries. I thought it had some good tips.

  1. Line bottom of refrigerator crisper's with paper towels. This will absorb extra moisture that makes veggies rot.
  2. To keep herbs fresh for up to a month, keep in bunches washed and in plastic baggies and freeze. They will be easier to chop when frozen and defrost the minute they hit a hot pan.
  3. Put a bay leaf in with pasta, rice, or flour to repel bugs.
  4. Spread butter or margarine on the side of cut cheese to keep from drying out.
  5. When carrots, celery, or radishes have lost their crunch, put in water with a slice of raw potato and watch them freshen right before your eyes.
  6. Bananas spoil less quickly when kept as a bunch.
  7. Put rice in salt shaker to avoid salt clumping.
  8. Stock up on butter when on sale. Can freeze for up to 6 months. Store in airtight container so it doesn't take on the taste of other things in the freezer.
  9. To make cottage cheese or sour cream last longer, store upside down. This creates a vacuum that seals the container and inhibits the growth of bacteria that causes spoilage.
  10. Honey is the only non-perishable food. Even if it crystallizes, microwave for 30 seconds to make clear again.
  11. Brown sugar will not harden if kept in the freezer, but if you already have hard brown sugar, put a slice of bread with it or microwave for 30 seconds.
  12. If you are unsure of an eggs freshness, put in water. If it sinks it is good; if it floats throw that egg at someone for fun. :)

I'm definitely going to try the sour cream trick, the brown sugar trick, and I recently tried the towel in the crisper to absorb the moisture and that DOES work! Thanks for sharing this!
